The story in brief:

We are pleased to announce results from the DeFROST4Hydropower project which was supported by Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).

Together with trading, engineering and data teams from 9 Swiss energy companies and rainfall-runoff modelling specialists Hydrique Engineers, we ran numerous assimilation tests across 12 different catchment areas to highlight how snowpack data from satellites can prove tangible benefits for the hydropower ecosystem.

The results showcase improved income, hydro asset optimization and financial risk reduction, in particular for long-term trading with:

✅ forecasting errors reduced by up to 50% compared to multi-annual averages

✅ forecasting performance improved by 10%

✅ number of trading adjustments reduced by up to 20%

We are very proud to say that this project provides actionable insights for the hydropower community to help reduce financial risk, strengthen market position and boost climate resilience.
