What to expect in this episode

Join our guest speakers from Alpiq and Hydrique Engineers for an exclusive discussion alongside hydropower specialists from across the world to learn how near real-time satellite data can optimize long-term trading options for hydropower trading teams.

❄️ Data application presentation from rainfall-runoff modelling specialists Hydrique Engineers

🛰️ DeFROST4Hydropower project highlights and significant key takeaways from our CEO and CTO

⚡ Innovation results and thoughts from project participant and client Alpiq

💡 Our speakers answered audience questions during the Q&A session

On Thursday, 19th January 2023 we proudly welcomed energy traders, asset managers, hydrologists, project managers, data scientists, risk managers, civil engineers, power market analysts, innovation and digitalization specialists, operators, wholesale traders, energy managers, data analysts, power traders, market operations managers, options traders and strategy managers from across the international hydropower industry community.

The agenda:

Our CTO, Daria Lüdtke opens the proceedings and briefly introduces our climate-tech startup Wegaw. Then our CEO & Co-Founder, Ion Padilla provides an overview of the DeFROST4Hydropower project, as well as a glimpse into how Wegaw’s cutting-edge geospatial and AI capabilities were put to use for this 18 month long project, before introducing our guest speakers from Hydrique Engineers and Alpiq.

Results of the project:

Dr Frédéric Jordan, Director of Hydrique Engineers (our data integration partner for the region) presents information on the modelling process, whilst Nicolas Adam, Civil Engineer at Alpiq shares first-hand project experience and speaks about the tangible value of the Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) datasets for the energy production company’s long-term trading forecasting, which include:

✅ reduce forecasting errors by up to 50%

✅ improve forecasting performance by 10%

✅ reduce number of trading adjustments by up to 20%

Key Takeaways

This webinar highlights key takeaways from our scientific and industry collaboration project, also known as DeFROST4Hydropower, that produced datasets for 12 unique hydrologic basins throughout the Swiss French alps, and has contributed to long-term trading optimization by up to 50% through the assimilation of our geospatial and AI infused data into hydrological forecasting models.

❄️ Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) is the main reliable predictor for long-term water flow forecasting

📈 A good long-term forecast makes trading more effective and reduces financial risk

⚡ Efficient long-term trading is the essence to support a resilient asset optimization strategy that combats climate anomalies and market volatility
