Wegaw Webinar
Episode 2
Optimizing long-term trading by integrating observed snow data into hydropower models
The Webinar
Took place on: Thursday, January 19th 2023
Who attended: We proudly welcomed an exclusive array of hydropower experts from across the globe, including hydropower trading professionals who work with assets impacted by snowmelt, typically at hydropower plants in mountainous regions. For instance, energy traders, asset managers, hydrologists, project managers, data scientists, risk managers, civil engineers, power market analysts, innovation and digitalization specialists, operators, wholesale traders, energy managers, data analysts, power traders, market operations managers, options traders and strategy managers from across the international hydropower industry community.
What to expect in this episode
Since 2021, we have been delivering reliable and scalable data driven solutions for hydropower stakeholders that optimize production and enhance trading efficiencies whilst supporting the industry in closing the gap on billions in lost potential revenue caused by trading edge loss. Our satellite derived datasets have a proven high accuracy monitoring track-record in delivering near real-time climate insights that can lead to trading and income increases whilst production and climate resilience.
During this episode our co-founder & CEO Ion Padilla and CTO, Daria Lüdtke is joined by Nicolas Adam, Civil Engineer of Alpiq and Dr Frédéric Jordan, Director of Hydrique Ingénieurs to share highlights and insights from our Swiss Federal Office of Energy supported project that involved just over a dozen hydroelectricity stakeholders from across the western Switzerland ecosystem, including:

This webinar highlights key takeaways from our scientific and industry collaboration project, also known as DeFROST4Hydropower, that produced datasets for 12 unique hydrologic basins throughout the Swiss French alps, and has contributed to long-term trading optimization by up to 50% through the assimilation of our geospatial and AI infused data into hydrological forecasting models.
Meet your hosts
Our CTO, Daria Lüdtke opens the proceedings with a brief project overview, as well as a glimpse into how Wegaw’s cutting-edge geospatial and AI capabilities were put to use for this 18 month long project. Our CEO & Co-Founder, Ion Padilla then briefly introduces our climate-tech startup Wegaw and speaks about our role as project leader before introducing our guest speakers from Hydrique Engineers and Alpiq.
Dr Frédéric Jordan, Director of Hydrique Engineers (our data integration partner for the region) presents information on the modelling process, whilst Nicolas Adam, Civil Engineer at Alpiq shares first-hand project experience and speaks about the tangible value of the Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) datasets for the energy production company’s long-term trading forecasting.
To conclude this second episode of our Energy Transition Webinar Series, Daria will summarize the key findings, highlight the importance of the results for the hydropower sector and share thanks for all involved in this momentous project, before opening the floor for audience members to ask questions during a highly interactive and enlightening Q&A session.
